About Becky Sheppard

I am an HCPC registered dramatherapist based in Brighton, and working in person and online.
I qualified with an MA in dramatherapy from Roehampton University in 2017.

I have experience offering therapy to adults who are receiving support through the NHS mental health services, through therapy schemes available in the workplace and within my private practice.

I also have extensive experience of working with children and young people within schools and charities, receiving NHS mental health care, and within my own private practice. I have worked as a therapist in Primary, Secondary, Sixth form, Independent and Specialist school settings. I have worked for the Brighton YMCA counselling service and Roundabout Dramatherapy.

I have been working in Private Practice since 2023.

What are sessions with you like?
Sessions with me are client-led but they do follow a predictable structure, which is common within dramatherapy.
There is time at the beginning to 'check-in' with how you are feeling and with what feels important to bring into the space.
There is time to explore whatever might have come up and to build on what may have been shared in earlier sessions.
And there is time at the end to reflect and 'check out' as we prepare to end the session.

The length of time spent in these moments and the way that you might share with me depends on you and your preferences, in that moment.

You might talk directly, or use metaphor, or use sound or gesture, or you might use the provided (or created) creative images or materials.

Session scheduling and pricing
My main current clinical availability is on Mondays and Tuesdays during the day (sessions starting between 10am and 5pm).
I have some limited availability on weekday evenings and during the day on the weekend, subject to availability. Please get in touch to discuss what might work for you.
Sessions run for 50 minutes, starting on the hour. (Session length may vary for children, as appropriate)
There is a fee of £65 per session.
I typically work long-term with people (on a weekly rolling basis) but I can also offer fixed-term blocks of sessions (often 8 or 12 sessions) if appropriate and helpful.
I offer a free 20 minute introductory phone call. This gives you some time to tell me more about what you are looking for and for us to talk about how we might work together.
If you decide you would like to continue, we would then arrange an initial full length session (which is chargeable).
What creative methods might you offer?
In addition to sitting and talking, as an experienced dramatherapist, I can offer creative materials and techniques to support self expression, develop greater understanding and bring about change. I will help you find ways to connect with, explore and better understand and address the issues that have led you to come to therapy.

You are free to express yourself however feels right for you in that moment- it could be a chosen object or image, a drawing, a written script, a gesture or sound, a movement, a metaphor, a character.

Typically in my dramatherapy suitcase I have a range of materials available, such as writing and drawing equipment, fabrics, small objects/figures/animals and image cards.
And of course we have ourselves, for embodied work, improvisation, role work, and relaxation and breath work.

I cater my materials to accommodate clients of differing ages (e.g. age appropriate images/objects).

The benefits of working this way are many, but the techniques can:
-
ground you and connect you to yourself;
-
give you distance from a named problem/experience and help you to see things from other perspectives;
-
give you permission to be curious and playful where perhaps that has felt out of reach;
-
enable you to express something that is without or beyond words.

Every session is led by and tailored to you.
Everything is an offer. You are in control of the space and can share whatever feels important in the way that suits you.
